Das Buch macht anschaulich, dass angeblich veraltete analoge Praktiken in der zeitgenössischen fotografischen und filmischen Kunst nicht nur größte Aktualität, sondern auch kritisches Potenzial besitzen. Am Beispiel von künstlerischen Praktiken, die der Idee des Fotografischen und/oder Kinematischen verpflichtet sind, nicht aber zwingend zu Fotografien oder Filmen führen, wird dargelegt, auf welch vielfältige Weise das Dispositiv – der Apparatus – ausgelotet, zerlegt, reflektiert, modifiziert und neu arrangiert werden kann. Die Beiträge, auch aus Kooperationen zwischen KünstlerInnen und WissenschaftlerInnen hervorgegangen, nehmen die dazu erforderlichen technisch-materiellen Verfahren in den Blick und zeigen, dass ein Wissen um mediale Differenz nicht zuletzt auch von gesellschaftspolitischer Relevanz ist.

The book illustrates that supposedly outmoded, analog practices in contemporary photographic and cinematic art are not only highly topical, but also possess a certain critical potential. Using the example of artists’ practices that are motivated by the idea of the photographic and/or the cinematic but do not necessarily lead to photographs or films, the book shows how, in multiple ways, the apparatus or dispositif can be explored, taken apart, modified, and reconstituted in a variety of ways. Contributions from the cooperations between artists and media scholars focus on technical and/or material processes and demonstrate that knowledge of medial differences is also socially and politically relevant.
