Kristina Pia Hofer leads the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project Situating Cinesonics (V770), which is located at the Department of Media Theory at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna. In her post-doc thesis, Kristina asks how different experiences of cinema as a sound medium reappear in contemporary film-/video installations and audiovisual live performances. 2015-2018 Kristina worked for the project A Matter of Historicity (amatterofhistoricity.net) at the Department of Art History at Angewandte. 2008 to 2014, she held a position at the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies (IFG) at Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. Kristina also performs music (as The Boiler, Ana Threat, Voiler, and in other constellations), and sometimes also on contemporary dance/performance stages (most recently in Veza Fernandez’ Amadora Llama, 2019, and Elizabeth Ward’s Dancing’s Demons, 2020, both for TQW Wien).
Kristina holds a degree in sociology from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, an MA in English and American literature and cultural studies from National Central University Chungly, Taiwan, and a PhD in media theory from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her dissertation Media Genealogies and the Pornographic ‘Real’: Essays on Amateur Pornography (supervisor: Gabriele Jutz), won an Award of Excellence of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (2015). In 2015, she also received the award for best publication in gender and media of the Association for Media Studies (GfM).
Kristina has been teaching classes on feminist and queer theory, cultural studies, media theory and academic writing at Angewandte since 2014. In 2020/21, she’s offering classes at the Departments of Cross-Disciplinary Strategies, Cultural Studies, and Media Theory.
