Univ.-Lekt. Mag. Dr. M.A. Kristina-Pia Hofer

Kristina Pia Hofer teaches for the Department of Media Theory as Senior Lecturer, and leads the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project Situating Cinesonics (DOI: 10.55776/V770), which is also located at the Department. In her post-doc thesis, Kristina asks how sound studies researchers can learn – and unlearn – sonic methodologies from minoritarian artists who employ sonic strategies to address questions of power and the politics of representation in audiovisual work. 2015-2018 Kristina worked for the project A Matter of Historicity (amatterofhistoricity.net) at the Department of Art History at Angewandte. 2008 to 2014, she held a position at the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies (IFG) at Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. Kristina also performs music (as/in Voiler, Pfarre, Puke Puddle, Peace Vaults, and others).
Kristina holds a degree in sociology from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, an MA in English and American literature and cultural studies from National Central University Chungly, Taiwan, and a PhD in media theory from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her dissertation Media Genealogies and the Pornographic ‘Real’: Essays on Amateur Pornography (supervisor: Gabriele Jutz), won an Award of Excellence of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (2015). In 2015, she also received the award for best publication in gender and media of the Association for Media Studies (GfM).
Kristina has been teaching classes on sound studies, media theory, feminist and queer theory, and academic writing at Angewandte since 2014. In 2024/24, her classes amplify questions of sound archives, ethnographic sound recordings, and Western epistemologies of subjects and objects in academic knowledge production.
